The cost of living crisis is hitting hard in Scotland. The Trussell Trust charity, which provides emergency food and support to people in poverty, reported that its Scottish food banks distributed 259,744 emergency food parcels between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023,  including almost 90,000 parcels for children. This is the largest amount of food parcels ever distributed in Scotland.

Clearly help is crucially needed. Thankfully, Scotland’s Regional Moorland Groups (SRMG) and The Country Food Trust (CFT) are working together to tackle food insecurity in the most practical way. Last week 1,216 pouches of nutritious, protein-rich meals – Free Range Pheasant Curry and Wild Game Curry – were distributed to local food banks and community kitchens in the Scottish Borders.

Commenting on the partnership, Mark Ewart, National Engagement Manager at SRMG, stated: “This partnership aligns with our commitment to supporting local communities and promoting sustainable practices on regional moorland estates. Together, we hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.”

SJ Hunt, CEO at CFT, added: “We believe in the power of good food to make a positive impact. Our collaboration with SRMG allows us to extend our reach and bring nutritious, protein-rich meals to individuals and families in the Scottish Borders. ”

This partnership marks the beginning of a concerted effort to address the complex challenge of food insecurity in the region and both organisations will be building on these actions.
