Around 100 Gordon Setters paraded around the Main Arena on Saturday 6th July 2024 (in 2023 there were almost 70). The event is organised by The Gordon Setter Club of Scotland.
About Gordon Setters

Gordon Setters are specifically used for hunting upland game birds like grouse, pheasant, and woodcock. They are part of the Setter family, which includes English and Irish Setters, and are renowned for their unique combination of traits that make them effective in this role. Here’s how they are used in field sports:
1. Pointing Game Birds
Gordon Setters are trained to “set” or “point” birds. This means they locate the game and freeze in a distinct pointing posture to signal the hunter where the birds are hiding. Their ability to scent birds from a distance is exceptional.
2. Stamina and Endurance
Known for their stamina and work ethic, Gordons are excellent for covering large areas of rough terrain, whether in heather-covered moorlands, woods, or fields. Their robust build and energy allow them to work tirelessly throughout a hunt.
3. Hunting in Pairs
Like other setters, Gordons work well in partnership with hunters. After pointing, they remain steady until the birds are flushed and shot. Their cooperation and trainability make them reliable companions in the field.
4. Retrieving
While they are primarily pointers, many Gordon Setters are also trained to retrieve downed birds. This versatility adds to their usefulness in the field.
5. Adaptability
Gordon Setters excel in a variety of terrains and weather conditions. Their thick, wavy coat offers protection in cold and wet environments, making them well-suited for hunts in challenging conditions.
Gordon Setters are valued in field sports for their ability to locate, point, and sometimes retrieve game birds. Their intelligence, stamina, and loyalty make them excellent hunting partners for those pursuing upland game.
