Field sports in the UK and Ireland continue to thrive thanks to passionate young handlers who dedicate their time to training, competition, and countryside traditions.
Developing Young Talent in Field Sports
At just 16 years old, Conan Bell is already a well-known figure in the Gundog Scene, earning the nickname “Nice Bell” for his gentlemanly demeanor in the sport. Growing up alongside his father Oliver Bell’s dogs, an active member of the Ireland team, Conan has developed a deep connection to the field. In 2023, he showcased his skills with his own trained dog, Bru, winning first place in the Scottish Game Fairs Junior Handler Competition. Tragically, after a sudden accident, Bru passed away, prompting Conan to reserve a puppy from a reputable litter at the same fair.
A few weeks later, he welcomed an eight-week-old yellow Labrador named “Allmikamores Great Pete” into his home in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, marking the beginning of a new training chapter.
A Breakthrough Year in Field Sports Competition
The year 2025 proved to be a remarkable season for Conan and Pete, as it marked their first full year of competition. They set a strong precedent by winning their inaugural Puppy Test and securing third place in the Novice category on the same day. Their success continued at various Working Tests in Ireland, culminating in a triumphant performance at The Scottish Game Fair, where they excelled in a challenging course set by A Panel Judge, Janice Cunningham.
This achievement earned them a place on the trophy and a collection of prizes, including a £50 cash donation from Balbedie K9 Retreat, which Conan likely used to treat the Irish Team to dinner in celebration of their overall victory.
Field Sports Success in Novice Field Trials
With a passion for Field Trials, Conan eagerly participated in a 16 Dog Novice Field Trial organised by the Fermanagh Gundog Club during the shooting season, where he was thrilled to receive a Certificate of Merit after completing five retrieves. He continued to build on this success by finishing several more Novice Trials, laying a solid foundation for Pete’s burgeoning career.
The Future of Field Sports in 2026 Competitions
As he looks ahead to the 2026 calendar, Conan will age out of the Junior Handler Competition but aspires to receive an invitation to the All Age Competition on July 3rd, necessitating a long journey from Ireland to Scotland compete.
