For more than a century, NFU Mutual has been committed to supporting rural communities, championing local causes, and helping those who rely on vital front‑line services. As a purpose‑led, member‑focussed organisation, this commitment shines through two key charitable initiatives: the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust and the NFU Mutual Agency Giving Fund.
What is the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust
Established in 1998, the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust is one of the main ways the business supports national charities working to protect and strengthen rural life. Each year, the Trust provides significant funding to organisations tackling some of the most pressing challenges across the UK.
In 2025 alone, the Trust donated more than £1.2 million, supporting 28 good causes delivering work in areas such as rural poverty relief, agricultural education, mental wellbeing, community resilience, and food redistribution efforts. These include well‑known organisations such as The Royal Countryside Fund, RSABI, RABI, FareShare, Farmstrong Scotland, and the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.
How is the Trust making an impact
Since it was founded, the Charitable Trust has distributed over £10.9 million, making a meaningful difference to education, research, social welfare, and poverty relief across farming and rural communities. Its work forms part of NFU Mutual’s wider £4 million charitable giving pledge for 2026.
Complementing this national impact is the NFU Mutual Agency Giving Fund, a UK‑wide initiative designed to empower local NFU Mutual agency and branch offices to support the causes that matter most in their own communities. First introduced in 2020 in response to the pandemic, the Fund continues to grow each year. In 2026, NFU Mutual will donate £2.33 million directly to local front‑line charities nominated by agency teams across more than 280 locations nationwide.
Supporting the Scottish community
The Fund has become a cornerstone of support for Scottish communities. In 2025, Scottish agencies nominated 29 charities, securing a combined £229,071 in donations to help keep essential services running. Beneficiaries ranged from mental health projects and rural transport schemes to community food initiatives and air ambulance services. These nominations reflect the invaluable local insight of NFU Mutual agencies, who understand the challenges faced by rural communities and can direct funding where it will have the greatest impact.
Together, the Charitable Trust and the Agency Giving Fund embody NFU Mutual’s commitment to protecting rural lives and livelihoods. By supporting both national initiatives and grassroots projects, NFU Mutual continues to play a vital role in strengthening communities across Scotland and the wider UK.
