Are you a Wegan? Should you be?

2025-04-02T10:06:27+00:00

What is Weganism? Weganism is veganism with a game twist. Wegans only eat wild meat and fish that they have shot or caught themselves. There are several famous wegans around. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, set a personal challenge for himself in 2011 to only eat meat from animals he had killed. These included goats, pigs, chickens and lobsters. https://twitter.com/MuskokaWitch/status/1612469014722408453 New York Times best selling author Tim Ferriss is often credited as having brought the term Weganism into mainstream parlance when he included it in his Five Bullet Friday newsletter. He defines it  as: "Wegan /ˈwēɡən/ noun. Someone who follows ...

Simon Whitehead of Pakefield Ferrets is a unique character in modern day Britain. He is a rabbiting aficionado, author of many books which include the acclaimed ‘Ahead of the Game’ and his latest, ‘Pugs and Drummers’. Both delve into the history, harvest, preparation and cooking of wild rabbit, as well as looking into the mindset of the author. His demonstrations are both educational and amusing, but also promote the virtues and practice of ferreting to the wider world. https://youtu.be/vDPRSDx3nDE Performances From a village green to The Game Fair and in-between, Simon's arena demonstrations are ranked amongst the most entertaining and ...

2025-04-02T10:06:42+00:00

We are extremely grateful to the help and support provided by Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) at The Scottish Game Fair. The charity has a stand at the Fair from which it provides a useful Shop & Drop service and also runs a buggy service from the main gate through to the car parks. Both are available to the public for a charity donation, which goes to a very good cause. The facts and figures on rural crime in Scotland

2026-07-15T11:53:44+00:00

Here's a bit of good news if you live in a rural area in Scotland. A report published by our sponsors, rural insurers NFU Mutual, has revealed that the cost of rural crime has fallen by 48%. The figures are taken from NFU's 2023 Rural Crime Report. Rural crime cost Scotland £1.4m in 2022, a fall of 48% from 2021.* The countryside is fighting back. The welcome decrease comes after Scotland was hard hit by thieves targeting quad bikes in 2021, with the cost of rural crime in the country rocketing to £2.6m that year compared to £1.7m in 2020. Soaring ...

Bee bombs to help bumblebees thrive

2025-04-02T10:07:00+00:00

Do you know what a bee bomb is? Well, bee bombs help to create wildflower habitats where bees and butterflies make their lives. By just scattering bee bombs onto open ground you will be providing new spaces for bees to live. Sadly 97% wildflower habitats in the UK have been lost since 1945 and it is crucial we create spaces for bees who are key to a healthy ecosystem. Bella Gemmell, a student at Fairview International School (a sponsor of the Scottish Game Fair), has been making and selling wildflower seed bombs.  All profits are being donated to The Bumblebee Conservation ...

How an investment company is doing its bit to fund biodiversity

2026-07-15T11:53:22+00:00

GWCT supporters are receiving complimentary entry to The Scottish Game Fair this year, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Waverton, an investment management company. But why is Waverton interested in biodiversity and natural capital? Why the support for The Scottish Game Fair? Last year Ross Macleod, Head of Policy in Scotland at the GWCT and Paris Jordan, Senior Multi-Asset Analyst at Waverton, met to talk about responsible stewardship and sustainability. Ross explained GWCT operations, conservation and the promotion of biodiversity and Waverton discussed how to value, measure and manage natural capital. Here's how the conversation went. The worlds of biodiversity and ...

Highland dancing: It certainly isn’t what it used to be!

2025-04-02T10:07:22+00:00

The swirl of a kilt, the music of bagpipes and dancers deftly moving their feet in time. Highland dancing is as Scottish as porridge, haggis, Robbie Burns and one of the hallmarks of this wonderful country's culture. The young Highland dancers who will be entertaining audiences at The Scottish Game Fair have learnt their technique at The Gordon School of Dancing in Montrose. I caught up with Robina Addison, the principal, and asked her a few questions. Q: Can you tell us a little about the history of Highland dancing and how it began? R: Traditionally kings and Scottish clan chiefs ...

Supporting conservation and land management at the GWCT Scottish Game Fair

2026-07-15T11:52:51+00:00

Look around at the beautiful landscape of Scotland surrounding Scone Palace. It appears completely natural but actually retains much of its beauty due to active land management and conservation principles based on solid science. Without keepers, land managers and conservationists doing vital work, the vistas of Scotland would look very different. The GWCT plays a key role in this, promoting game and wildlife management as part of nature conservation, whilst working with the shooting and hunting community. The charity employs many scientists and runs over 60 research projects, many in collaboration with universities supporting PhD students. (You can review GWCT science ...

Country Groups Tackling Food Poverty in the Borders

2026-07-15T13:45:12+00:00

The cost of living crisis is hitting hard in Scotland. The Trussell Trust charity, which provides emergency food and support to people in poverty, reported that its Scottish food banks distributed 259,744 emergency food parcels between 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023,  including almost 90,000 parcels for children. This is the largest amount of food parcels ever distributed in Scotland. Clearly help is crucially needed. Thankfully, Scotland's Regional Moorland Groups (SRMG) and The Country Food Trust (CFT) are working together to tackle food insecurity in the most practical way. Last week 1,216 pouches of nutritious, protein-rich meals - Free Range ...

2026-07-15T11:49:45+00:00

As the festive season approaches, the excitement in the kitchen is palpable. Christmas is a time to celebrate, indulge, and create memorable culinary experiences for family and friends. For me, this joyous occasion is not just about the final feast but the entire journey of preparation, from sourcing the finest ingredients to orchestrating a symphony of flavours on the plate. Abundant local produce One of my guiding principles for a truly exceptional Christmas meal is the emphasis on local produce. What better Christmas card could there be to send a fieldsports lover than this scene of a pair of winter grouse, painted by talented artist Jason Lowes? The image was donated to the GWCT for Christmas card use by Jason, who says of the charity: "We should all do what we can to support the GWCT, it's an excellent organisation that does valuable work. More people should be helping them." Jason lives in County Durham in a village just six miles from where he was born and never wants to live anywhere else. It's the ideal setting for his art and ...

Capercaillie Faces Extinction Despite Conservation Efforts

2026-07-15T13:46:34+00:00

HEADING New research by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) has shown that capercaillie numbers in Scotland have nearly halved in ten years, with as few as 304 birds remaining in 2020, compared to 580 in 2010. The figures show capercaillie heading towards extinction unless further measures are put in place to save this iconic bird. The largest grouse in the world, capercaillie were once widespread across Scotland before going extinct in the 1780s. Following reintroduction efforts in the 1830s, it is now only found in old pine forests in the Scottish Highlands, primarily in the Cairngorms National ...
