David’s journey into Gundog training began remarkably early. At just 14 years old, he started training his first dog, quickly developing the skills and discipline that would shape his future career in the sport.

Strongly influenced by his mother, Janice Cunningham who was herself an A Panel Judge for Spaniels and Retrievers, David grew up immersed in the Gundog community. Under her guidance and through years of commitment, he steadily built a reputation as both a talented handler and knowledgeable judge.

Today, at only 32 years old, David has achieved what many spend decades striving towards, becoming one of the UK’s youngest A Panel Retriever Judges.

Balancing Passion with Professional Life

David’s accomplishments in Field Trials and Working Tests speak for themselves. Among his most notable achievements is qualifying for and competing in the prestigious IGL Retriever Championship on three separate occasions an extraordinary feat in one of the most competitive arenas in Gundog sport.

His standout result came in 2016, when he secured an impressive second-place finish with “Devonvale Shadow.” The dog remains especially significant to David, as Shadow is also the sire of his current star retriever, FTCH Craigmaddie Mufasa of Bishopbrae, affectionately known as “Ace.”

Ace has enjoyed an outstanding career of his own, winning multiple field trials and working tests while representing the Scottish Team with distinction. Even as he approaches his ninth birthday, Ace continues to compete and perform at an exceptional level.

One of the reasons David resonates so strongly with younger handlers and newcomers to the sport is his relatable journey. Unlike many full-time professional trainers, David balances Gundog training alongside a full-time career, dedicating evenings and weekends to working his dogs.

His success demonstrates that with determination, consistency and passion, it is possible to excel at the very highest levels of Gundog competition while managing everyday responsibilities.

Judging at the Prestigious IGL Retriever Championship

This year marks another major milestone in David’s career, as he joins the judging panel for the renowned IGL Retriever Championship.

As one of only four judges selected for the event, David will help oversee approximately 60–70 competing retrievers across three days of elite competition. The appointment reflects the immense respect he has earned throughout the Gundog community and further cements his standing within the sport.
