The man behind Lock Stock Sporting
The man behind Lock Stock Sporting is Murray Thomson, a passionate advocate for countryside sports and sustainable living. His shooting journey began on these very grounds, attending the fair in 2000 as a bright-eyed 13-year-old with £7 in his pocket. Drawn in by the sound of gun fire and the thrill of the “have-a-go” clay stand, that day sparked a life long love for shooting.
By the age of 15, Murray had bought his first shotgun and was learning not just the sport but the responsibility and community that comes with it. Murray is a first-generation shooter who faced early challenges — struggling with dyslexia at school and unsure of his path. But the countryside offered him something school couldn’t: a sense of belonging, purpose and connection. With his mum’s support, he learned to shoot safely and responsibly. That passion eventually took him into competitive shooting, earning his first Scotland cap at 30 years of age and later winning a bronze medal at the World Championships with Team Scotland.
About Lock Stock Sporting – A Family Affair
From there, Lock Stock Sporting was born, an idea brought to life with his wife Louise and built on values learned along the way: inclusivity, mentorship and respect for the land. What began as a personal interest has grown into a business spanning East Lothian to Yorkshire, offering tailored shooting experiences, training, and events that welcome everyone, from curious beginners to seasoned professionals.
Murray’s story is one of turning a spark into something lasting. Today, he’s not only running a thriving business but raising three boys in a household where country pursuits are part of everyday life. His eldest son is already showing a keen interest, and weekends are often spent helping dad on the Lock Stock stand — making it a true family affair.
For Murray, shooting is about more than just sport. It’s about food provenance, land management, and community. He’s passionate about teaching his kids where their food comes from, how it’s harvested and prepared, and the vital role gamekeepers playin protecting Scotland’s wild spaces.
