The Gerry Lapsley Rising Star Award returns to the GWCT Scottish Game Fair this year, recognising the next generation of talented young gundog handlers and their dogs.

Now in its fourth year, the award has become a meaningful part of the Fair’s gundog programme, celebrating the dedication, skill and passion of young people entering the sport. This year’s presentation carries even greater significance following the passing of Gerry Lapsley earlier this year.

A respected figure within the working gundog community, Gerry dedicated his life to country sports. From training Labradors and judging competitions to coaching aspiring handlers and representing Scotland, he was admired not only for his expertise but also for his generosity in encouraging others to develop their skills.

The Rising Star Award was established to reflect Gerry’s belief that the future of country sports depends on supporting young handlers and recognising emerging talent. He was immensely proud to have his name associated with an award that celebrates the next generation of working dog enthusiasts.

Through Ballochfield Sporting Dogs, Gerry’s family are honoured to continue supporting the award by donating the trophies and prizes, ensuring his passion for working dogs and commitment to mentoring young people lives on.

The award serves as both a celebration of outstanding young talent and a lasting tribute to a man whose influence continues to be felt throughout the gundog community.

We wish all competitors the very best of luck and look forward to presenting the 2026 Gerry Lapsley Rising Star Award at this year’s GWCT Scottish Game Fair.

Gerry’s legacy lives on in every young handler encouraged, every dog trained, and every lesson passed on to the next generation.
